Mesoscopic Spin Hall Effect in Multiprobe Semiconductor Bridges

چکیده
We predict that pure spin current flowing through the transverse leads of quantumcoherent two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), which is induced by conventional unpolarized charge current driven through the longitudinal leads, can be tuned by the Rashba spin-orbit (SO) interaction and will decay only when disorder is sufficiently strong (but before electrons become localized). Furthermore, the polarization vector of the transported spin is not orthogonal to the plane of 2DEG. Thus, mesoscopic spin Hall current will exhibit markedly different features from recently predicted intrinsic spin Hall effect in macroscopic homogeneous clean semiconductors with SO interaction.

Mesoscopic spin Hall effect in multiprobe ballistic spin-orbit-coupled semiconductor bridges
We predict that unpolarized charge current driven through the longitudinal leads attached to ballistic quantum-coherent two-dimensional electron gas 2DEG in semiconductor heterostructure will induce a pure spin current, which is not accompanied by any net charge flow, in the transverse voltage probes. Its magnitude can be tuned by the Rashba spin-orbit SO coupling and, moreover, it is resilient...
متن کاملNonequilibrium spin Hall accumulation in ballistic semiconductor nanostructures.
We demonstrate that the flow of a longitudinal unpolarized current through a ballistic two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling will induce a nonequilibrium spin accumulation which has opposite signs for the two lateral edges and is, therefore, the principal observable signature of the spin Hall effect in two-probe semiconductor nanostructures. The magnitude of its out-of-pl...
متن کاملMultiprobe quantum spin Hall bars
We analyze electron transport in multiprobe quantum spin Hall (QSH) bars using the Büttiker formalism and draw parallels with their quantum Hall (QH) counterparts. We find that in a QSH bar the measured resistance changes upon introducing side voltage probes, in contrast to the QH case. We also study fourand six-terminal geometries and derive the expressions for the resistances. For these our a...
متن کاملTheory of Spin Hall Effects in Semiconductors
Spin Hall effects are a collection of phenomena, resulting from spin-orbit coupling, in which an electrical current flowing through a sample can lead to spin transport in a perpendicular direction and spin accumulation at lateral boundaries. These effects, which do not require an applied magnetic field, can originate in a variety of intrinsic and extrinsic spin-orbit coupling mechanisms and dep...
متن کاملExtrinsically vs. intrinsically driven spin Hall effect in disordered mesoscopic multiterminal bars
We show that pure spin Hall current, flowing out of a four-terminal two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) within inversion asymmetric heterostructure, contains contributions from both the extrinsic mechanisms (spin-orbit-dependent scattering off impurities) and the intrinsic ones (due to the Rashba coupling). The extrinsic contribution vanishes in the weakly and strongly disordered limits, and th...
